Keep It Dirty EP

Boola [Lomidhigh Organic]

Romanian upstart Boola [a] takes two steps forward and two to the left(field) on the ‘Keep It Dirty EP’, his second release for Lomidhigh Organic [l] this month.

The Danish label could have put out a mini album of his material when combined with the weirdly wonderful ‘Astroceva EP’ from a couple of weeks back, although with a debut LP for Rekids [l] in the pipeline, all is not lost.

If there is one trait that has characterized Boola’s output to date, it is a willingness to stick his neck out and try something different. The beauty of this release is that of the three tracks, two work rather effectively and one spectacularly doesn’t, however you almost find yourself forgiving just for taking the risk in the first place.

‘Thirstduub’ is the track Petre Inspirescu [a] would make should he forget his dedication to restraint; plodding lead lines collide with crash, bang, wallop percussion while an incoherent melody glues the whole thing together in the background. So far so good.

The strongest track on the EP arrives via ‘Blitshki’, a rolling Balkan-esque number that could almost almost be labeled as funky house if the genre wasn’t burnt at the stake five years ago. It’s the type of track we’d refer to as ’Luciano [a] mincer-house’ in the Beatportal office.

So to the blooper; ‘Garop’ attempts to fuse a ‘70s funk guitar, wah riff with a tough house backing and simply doesn’t quite manage it - gold star for effort though Boola.
