Kalimba

Kalimba

Steve Lawler [R&S]

At the close of one year and the start of another, a release like Steve Lawler’s ‘Kalimba’ is all the more significant.

A carnivale of ethnic percussion, tribal chants and the hyperdrive energy of Carl Cox’s brand of funkdafied techno, it is nothing if not unusual for the Year Of Our Lord 2008.

There’s not a belchy synth or anything that could be called a “bleep” for miles—‘Kalimba’ is maximalist.

It’s the kind of stuff Lawler was playing when he clasped his hands together for his first Global Underground compilation in 2000, and released records like ‘Andante’ and ‘Rise In’.

But to be honest, it’s not even really that. It’s not as dark. It’s got more in the treble department.

You could imagine Junior Vasquez mixing out of it into Qkumba Zoo’s ‘Child Inside’, circa 1996, a year of anthems and snare rolls.

With ‘Kalimba’ and a return-to-Twilo song like Nadastrom’s ‘Pussy’ sitting atop the Beatport charts, 2009 is looking mighty different already.
