Joyride
Pinch [Tectonic]
5 January, 2009 | 10.50AMPinch
has really outdone himself on this new Tectonic
release, honing his production styles to perfection and making ‘Joyride’ easily his finest work to date.
‘Joyride’ brings together all the best elements of Pinch’s styles, from the tribal beats akin to ‘Qawwali’ to the techno-influenced style pushed through on his ‘136 Trek’.
But what defines this work from all his previous releases is the attention to detail, the minute intricacies and calibre of overall production.
It’s apparent that he’s been tweaking buttons and harnessing the necessary sounds for a long time, now arriving at the pinnacle of his work.
The track itself is a multi-layered tribal percussive track with harmonious overtones that gradually builds itself up until halfway through when crisp, high-pitched notes drive in and push the track to its penultimate finish.
‘Joyride’ has the harsh, biting beats of the average jump-up style track, but without the excessive bassline that a lot of contemporary dubstep throws in.
Its progressive driving percussive beats are severely punishing and dynamic, and if this is a taster of the sound for 2009 for some of the more bolder producing artists, then this is sure to be an exciting year.
