Jon Rundell
- Mind Games (Original Mix)
The track kicks off with a solid rolling bassline, possibly some deep kicks???, and the monotony is broken up thanks to a wood block percussion elements every 4th. Into the second minute the track begins to take shape. Blips and bleeps are slowly introduced and layered until at the 3rd minute, the track takes a sharp turn left and we’re left with a breakdown that rivals most epic trance build ups. The breakdown highlights some gritty synths, at times heavily effected with some gnarly filters, and as the breakdown progresses, the anticipation builds until finally culminating in a simple, yet pleasing, crash that carries the track the rest of the way. This is impeccably crafted techno. There isn’t a single moment where you’re left wondering ‘what if?’.
Jon Rundell - Mind Games (Tomy DeClerque
Remix)
I first discovered Tomy when perusing through the Jesus Loved You discography, and his sound is clearly distinct, with some stark parallels to Valentino Kanzyani’s. This version is decidedly darker, more industrial and even more gritty than the first. The track has a hypnotizing rolling synth/siren effect that’s been hacked up with some low pass filters that constantly plays in the background, and though at first read that might sound unpleasant, I can’t help but fall in love with it. Unlike the original, Tomy takes away the long buildup and instead adds a few sparse mini breaks and crashes, adding a new element to the mix after each. This remix is down right dirty and driving. I’ve had a chance to sample his previous work, and I can say with certainty that this little ditty is his hardest techno tune of late.
Jon Rundell - Mind Games (Rafael Noronha & Re Dupre Remix)
This remix is much different in style, mostly due to the sudden change in overall atmosphere. This need to drive the listener into a frenzy through gritty filters and dark and broody undertones have been stripped and given room to a more house friendly aura. The highlight of this remix is at the midway marker, at which point the track’s energy levels receive a sudden jolt of energy thanks to a well placed mini build-up that, instead of dropping away, remains for a few phrases and jolts the listener, or dancer, into a floor frenzy!
Jon Rundell - Mind Games (Lance Blaise
& Rod B’s F’d Up on K Remix)
Well, what’s there to say about the title? It’s well known that electronica and drugs go hand in hand, and nothing does techno better than K. The track starts off hauntingly and immensely different from any of the previous versions. There’s a certain feeling of loss of control from the start, and the odd hacked and filtered vocal track certainly relates well to the feeling of being ‘f’d up on k’. The track, though haunting, is very simple and though that might have been the authors’ intention, I find it really hard to get hooked on. That is, until the 4th minute (2:53 to be exact). The tempo seems to pick up and the track gets some variation with some solid drive.
Jon’s original absolutely obliterates the rest of the remixes, and though reasons are quickly mounting as to why I should attend WMC, hearing this gem is high atop the list.
