John Acquaviva and Robosonic remix ‘DeepRush’ by Jan van Lier
John Acquaviva and Robosonic remix ‘DeepRush’ by Jan van Lier
26 May, 2008 | 2.02PMThis week, California-based up-and-coming producer/DJ Jan van Lier
releases his second EP on Definitive Recordings
, entitled ‘DeepRush’.
This track has already recieved a following around the world by being continually hammered by such DJs as Carl Cox (who famously dropped it at last year’s Creamfields), Adam Sheridan (who named it his #1 tune in Mixmag last month), and of course John Acquaviva.
The release includes two original tracks by Jan (DeepRush and No Hander) and two extra mixes of DeepRush, one by Robosonic from Berlin, and another edit done by John Acquaviva, using the new Pacemaker DJ tool to it’s maximum effectiveness.
DeepRush is a pure peak-hour hugerooom hand-raiser, while No Hander is more of a blissed-out nostalgic ride through proggy-electro beatscapes.
An exclusive interview with Jan van Lier is below.
Tell us a bit about where you’re from
I am from Northern California, about 5 hours north of San Francisco, in a place called Humboldt County.
We have a small but vibrant scene, including many new producers who are really starting to come into their own.
This last year we’ve been lucky to have many great guest DJs come play with the local regulars. It’s really quite rare to have such a strong underground music scene in a place so small.
How did DeepRush come about?
Well, like any other track really, just by getting in the studio and working myself into a serious groove.
I wanted to do something a bit different, so I used arpeggiators and step-sequencers, something I don’t normally do, and came up with a tune that I thought was a bit over-the-top, so naturally I was quite pleasantly surprised when it started getting attention from people like Carl Cox and John Acquaviva!
What do you have planned for this summer?
I have releases coming out on various labels, including Cubic, Definitive and Teggno, which I am all very excited about, and I’m also looking to be touring around a little bit, so keep an eye open for that! I’m also working on releasing tunes through my own label, which will be a high-energy cross between Electro-House and a more melodic, progressive sound.
Who are some of your favorite producers out there right now?
Wow, there so many good ones!
I’ve been really into the Definitive sound, but if I say that I will sound like an advertisement!
I really like the people that are fusing a melodic edge into minimal and electro.
Stryke has been putting out some amazing stuff, as has Dumb Dan and Pryda.
Taurus and Vaggeli from Philly also have a really cool sound, and it’s good to have some really killer American producers around too!
What has probably been blowing my mind on the most consistent basis though is some of the stuff coming out on Yellow Tail… especially Ramon Tapia, Nudisco, and Patrick Zigon.
I think all of their stuff is really forward-thinking, which is one of the most important aspects of music for me.
