Jeff Milligan’s Wii Controller mixing technique
30 July, 2008 | 5.16AMAfter Jeff Milligan’s birthday event at Club Der Visionaires in Berlin where he played with Mike Shannon, Beatport caught up with Jeff to hear about his most recent innovation.
Jeff Milligan is the four-turntable wizard originally from Toronto who is known for his meticulous mixing skills.
He also runs his own label, Revolver, and a few months ago he came out with a great way to use his Wii controller to utilize Serato Scratch short keys while mixing on 4 turntables.
He has developed a script that enables him to program the Wii remote to synch with Serato.
The Wii becomes like another set of buttons on one side of his mixer that he can use to control Serato, rather than fiddling around with his keyboard.

Jeff explained the importance of his discovery.
“I was tired of spending a lot of time using the keyboard to control Serato while mixing.
I wanted to find a way to save time, so I researched using remote controllers with Serato.
I had a Wii console and I decided to find out how to use it with my Mac.
With a great program I found online, I developed my own script that controls Serato short keys.”

Here’s further information from Jeff Milligan’s website:
“...Controlling the computer by remote and taking ones hands off the computer keyboard saves time and annoyance. All you need is a Mac, a Nintendo Wii remote, and a cheap program called Remote Buddy which makes controlling any application on the mac hands free with a little bit of relatively easy programming on the side. Jeff Milligan configured short key triggers to his Wii remote so he could be taking care of the decks and mixer, rather than spending valuable time scrolling a database of music via the computer keyboard. the Nintendo Wii remote can be purchased separately from the Wii console and retails for around 30 euro. With a Mac, Serato SL or Final Scratch and a purchased Wii remote and Remote Buddy, you have fully versatile, hands free mixing solution for around 50 euro. Remote Buddy behaviours for Serato SL can be easily programmed for any application.”
