Japanese super turntablist DJ Kentaro cuts up roots reggae
4 September, 2008 | 5.39PMA former DMC world champ (in 2002) and now a true ninja representing the home-bred vibe in the Britain’s Ninja Tune family, DJ Kentaro has released yet another adventurous project.
Here’s a glimpse of ‘Tuff Cuts,’ DJ Kentaro’s exclusive mix using the classic reggae tunes from Pressure Sounds - Britain’s top reggae label that specialises in re-issuing hidden Jamaican gems.

It’s an extremely unique attempt by a DJ with ridiculous techniques to mix extremely laid back Jamaican tunes from decades ago, such as Prince Far I, Dennis Brown, King Tubby and Joe Higgs.
The result is a surprisingly pleasant listening experience, which proves DJ Kentaro’s deep appreciation of the music as well as his matured performance skills he has developed in the past years as an independent artist.
DJ Kentaro was recently nominated for the World’s Best Hip Hop DJ at DJ Awards.
‘Tuff Cuts’ is only available on CD in Japan and from selected outlets worldwide.
In Japan, the release parties for this special project is going to take place this weekend, at Liquidroom in Tokyo on Friday September 5th, at Sansui in Osaka on Saturday 6th, staring U-Roy performing with Japan’s Dry & Heavy, Pete Holdsworth of Pressure Sounds and more.
