Jamie Jones & Lee Foss launch Hot Waves

Jamie Jones [a] and Lee Foss, aka Hot Natured, are at the center of the underground house renaissance, making waves from LA rooftops to London warehouses to the terrace at DC-10. Last year, they branched out into A&R with the launch of Hot Creations, and this year they expand their empire with Hot Waves, a new digital offshoot designed to showcase the best tunes they come across in their travels.

Hot Waves’ inaugural compilation features a dozen cuts from the likes of Maceo Plex, Marc Ashken, Clive Henry, and Alex Arnout, as well as Jones and Foss themselves. We asked the boys to give us the rundown.

What is the idea behind Hot Waves? How will it differ from Hot Creations?

Hot Waves is a quarterly compilation of original tracks by both new and known artists. Tracks that maybe didn’t fit for Hot Creations or the artist didn’t have a full EP for Hot Creations, but we believed in the music and wanted to get it out there. It’s the same principle of memorable musical electronic songs, and we feel by putting forward as a compilation it will help get the music the attention it deserves. The tracks we felt were the strongest or best represented the depth of the compilation we’ve put on a vinyl sampler.

Will there be single-artist EPs on Hot Waves, or is the sublabel intended mainly as a compilation series?

For now it is compilation-only with the vinyl samplers, which makes it more special.

Could you pick a handful of tracks from the compilation and tell us a little about them?

Richy Ahmed, “Suck It”

Richy is one of the main members of the Hot Natured Crew; he gave us the track over the summer and it went down really well when Jamie played it on the terrace of DC10, so we knew we had something special on our hands.  It’s a phat, rolling, organ-driven house number.

Josh Tweek, “Green Surprises”

Josh is resident of a really good party up in Leeds called Louche; he passed us this cool boogie track and we thought it would great for Hot Waves. There’s a funky disco sample with a few tricks up its sleeve.

Maceo Plex, “Alpha”

Maceo is one of the hottest producers in electronic music right now.  His music is so well produced, great sounds with great ideas… “Alpha” was a track he sent us that we immediately knew had a depth that would help make the compilation complete. It’s a deep, Detroit house style, eerie early-morning or late-night track.

Alexis Raphael, “Spaceship”

We know Alexis from a cool party he does in London called Creche. He sent us “Spaceship” last fall and really jumped out. It’s a low-key afterparty jam with some nice spacey elements.
