James Zabiela gets into the Olympic spirit
3 July, 2008 | 1.20PM- Section: Music News Topics: Beatport Blog
Globe-trotting deck whizz James Zabiela has been announced as headline DJ for the 4th birthday party of leading Brighton, UK nightclub, Audio.
What makes it a little more interesting, though, is the mandatory fancy dress theme: ‘Retro Olympics’.
The show will be James’ Brighton debut, something of a surprise in a city that famously spawned such talents as Carl Cox, Dave Clarke, Adam Freeland, and of course, Fatboy Slim.
He’s joined by veteran Scottish techno bod Funk D’Void, plus DJs from super-trendy London club Adventures Close To Home.
While it’s fair to say that dance music in Brighton has taken a bit of a back seat to guitar-based sounds in recent years, Audio (formerly legendary acid house venue The Escape) has kept the flag flying with line-ups incorporating top names from breaks, D&B, underground house, dubstep and techno.
Fittingly for a city that wears its campness proudly on its sleeve, Audio’s fancy dress birthday bashes tend to have an air of silliness about them - Brighton is a city that puts much more emphasis on wacky fun than over-serious muso chin scratching.
We’re hoping the club demanded in its contract that everyone must adhere to the retro Olympics theme.
If so, hopefully we can bring you some priceless pics of Mr Zabiela dressed up like an ‘80s athlete very soon.
Audio’s 4th birthday bash takes place on July 21st at Audio, Marine Parade, Brighton, UK.
