J HAZEN has been doing twisted beats and soundscapes riddled with quirky
melodies for a long time. It has taken him from the New York scene where
he made his name to the inspiring art and cultural settings of San
Francisco where he now has his studio. His seminal release “700ft” gave
him scene recognition and earned him support both on the DJ circuit and
radio plays on both the BB C and underground stations. In 2010 SOUND OF HABIB
released four tracks aimed at the hardcore fans. Sublime and genre
defying these tracks gained a lot of underground support. Now it’s time
to unleash them again alongside some killer remixes from some of the
most forward thinking producers in breaks today. We have enlisted none
less THAN GELLA, 601, KRAYMON and SOTEG to twist and turn these tracks inside out.
The result really speaks for itself.

J Hazen Beatport interview

Which producers do you rate right now?

That’s a looong list, but off the top of my head: Scuba, Boxcutter, Martin Brothers, Hackman, Mount Kimbie, Floating Points, Lusine, anything on Chi Recordings. And lots of stuff in this whole bass-music/garage/techno mish mash crossover area.  I also have a knack for becoming completely obsessed with one track from a producer without being into anything else they do, so there are a lot of one-offs in that sense!

What was your best bit of feedback and from who?

I think the best feedback I ever got was from Nick Noize of the Lawgiverz many years back.  He wasn’t too into the tracks but I was always a fan and he had some insightful and refreshingly honest feedback, and the positive comments (it had some ‘stunning moments’ in it or something) were really reinforcing for me when I was just starting to release music.  So all in all not the most glowing review but it meant a lot to me at the time!

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the music scene?

Don’t start out with the “how to promote yourself” tutorials and all that nonsense, and don’t think there are any shortcuts.  Making music is hard work, so be patient and keep your nose to the grindstone.  Commit yourself to music, learn everything you can about it, take pride in what you do and the rest will follow.
