Is Remute a little bit macabre? ‘Absolutely’
12 February, 2010 | 4.40AMAs if Remute’s music wasn’t weird enough already, up creeps the Hamburg-based producer with a positively macabre low-fi video for his new single ‘Absolutely’.
At the end of a corridor we find a masked goon playing with a large medicine ball, before he’s unexpectedly strangled to death. Then a hatchet goes to work, cutting out his insides to reveal some raw meat, before it’s tossed into a frying pan with a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Mmm, tasty?
Cannibalism aside, the track itself is a rocking filtered house cut that ties in nicely to Remute’s label, which in the past year has shifted closer to the fuzzy grey area in between techno, house, and nu disco.
The imprint’s recent ‘Existence’ single from Cali & Paulussen is one of my favourite instrumentals at the moment. It combines shimmering disco instincts with underlying melodic techno, and reminds ever so slightly of Lifelike’s 2009 smash ‘Sequencer’.

Freaky and sleepy: Remute
That bastard disco/techno sound was taken a notch further on the label’s rather bizarre follow up single ‘Meow’, which comes by way of an unknown producer of the same name.
Clattering along on waves of energetic synths and vocoded chants not too dissimilar to the heavy electronic work of France’s Vitalic, it’s the random meows that will freak out the dancefloor every time. And that’s right up Remute’s back alley of course.
