IRR: Areal’s new sub-label kicks off
15 May, 2008 | 1.13PM- Section: Music News Topics: Beatport Blog
For the last 8 years, Areal has been charming and teasing listeners with its playful brand of lo-fi techno from a core of artists including Ada, Metope and Basteroid.
For their latest project, the crew have started International Rhythm Recordings as an outlet for all the other artists, styles and obscure tracks they get sent that don’t quite fit the Areal remit.
Their first release, from Ireland’s John Daly (pictured), has proved a hit with deep house, space disco and modern techno heads alike, so we caught up with the delectable Ada to find out what IRR has in store.
You can read what she had to say after the jump.
Hey Ada, congratulations on the new label launch. So why did you decide to start IRR?
Areal Records is celebrating its 7th birthday this year.
During that period of time we all worked on different projects such as Cereal Killers (aka Pan/tone, Jake Fairley, Metope, Ada and others) or Clippers (Metope and Basteroid), so we all had our stages of experimentation and our music developed into different directions.
In the end we all had some material that in our opinion couldn’t be released on Areal records, which is a label for the more playful techno music.
Also it was out of the question to release on other labels.
Then a friend of mine got my attention to John Daly, a very talented artist from Ireland.
That was the summer of last year, and we were all delighted by his sound.
That was the initial start of IRR.
What will the music style of the label be?
This kind of playfulness you know from Areal records, for example, is something you might find on IRR too but more connected to house/downtempo/electro-acoustic music.
But in this state it’s a bit too early to determine that…
What kind of artists you have coming up on the label?
On IRR002 there will be two wonderful tunes by DJ Koze.
After that we are planning releases from myself, and Cosmic DJ from International Pony, among others.
Tell me a little about your next few releases...
Be surprised!
