Introducing: Addison Groove
Introducing: Addison Groove
26 April, 2011 | 4.01AMTony Williams, a long time BMX rider originating from Bristol, has been in the production game for over five years now. Starting off under his original Headhunter
alias and recording for Tempa
, the gifted and obscenely productive dubstep artist spawned the massive “Prototype” and “Futurebound” before discovering the ghetto bass antics of Chicago juke, swapping his turntables for an 808 and donning the name Addison Groove.
With new records coming out on Tectonic
and 3024
and Addison Jukebox parties taking residency in Berlin and London, the juke-wielding star is becoming the talk of the town. We caught up with him to find more.
Where does the name Addison Groove come from?
Addison was one of the most popular unisex names of 2009, so in the beginning no one knew if I was a guy or gal; and I always liked the DJ name Easygroove.
Where would people recognize you from?
What’s the difference with your new alias?
More grooves with 808s, percussion and samples from wherever I can find them.
Can people still expect music from your old alias?
Something will be out towards the end of the year. Youngsta is playing two of my new things at the moment.
What is this juke thing and how did you fall into it?
YouTube got me clued up about it; I took the sound and made it fit into my Headhunter
DJ sets with some very confused faces looking at me in the beginning.
Are there any current musical peers in the scene you could recommend to newcomers?
Boddika/Instra:mental, Rashad, Spinn, Pinch, Ramadanman/Pearson Sound, Lando Kal, Joy O, FaltyDl, Night Slugs crew, Distal.
Do you DJ or play live? How would you describe your sets?
I do both, DJing and the live show. The live thing is done with outboard gear such as an 808, desk, FX boxes and Ableton, and consists of all my own stuff. On the odd occasion I throw in other people’s tracks too.
Where do you record?
Based in Bristol, England. I’ve got a studio above my bedroom in the attic, pretty sick space. Gets very hot up there in the summer though.
Do you currently have a favorite piece of gear or software?
Just got a new outboard compressor that I’m loving, and I really like playing around with the Sequential Circuits Pro One.
Which record do you wish you had made?
If a wrecking ball was headed for your house, which *one* record would you rescue before it hit?
Big Bud
, “Infinity + Infinity”
What are the three most important records for you at the moment?
They have been the three most for a while, but;
Boddika, “Elektron”
Pearson Sound, “Deep Inside”
When you’re not listening to electronic music, what do you get up to?
See my lady, bet or racing, ride BMX.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing with your life?
Selling drugs or something more legit like be a professional gambler; either way I’d be living the dream.
What’s your favorite club to play?
I’ll give you three: Croft in Bristol, Trouw in Amsterdam, and Berghain in Berlin.
Favorite drinking hole in Bristol?
Used to be The Tube, now it’s closed and I’m hardly ever out in Bristol these days, due to my weekends full of gigs elsewhere.
Tell us about your upcoming gigs and releases…
This week was the release of “This Is It"/"Make Um Bounce” on Tectonic
, next month I have a 12” on 3024
(Martyn’s label), then around the same time is a track on the new Hessle LP, and God knows what else after that; I’ll just keep making stuff and see what comes about from it.
