Introducing: Thyladomid

Introducing: Thyladomid

It’s always refreshing to see a budding producer burst onto the scene seemingly out of nowhere, sneaking past the predictable avenues for exposure and promotion. Such is the case for Charles Thiemann aka Thyladomid, a fresh faced German producer who, still wet behind the ears, has jumped from music-producer oblivion to scoring a top 10 hit on the Beatport top 100 chart. Perhaps we should be giving thanks to the legendary blues and soul vocalist Nina Simone, whose gives Thyladomid’s springy, dubby house track ‘The Voice’ its distinctive edge.

We took a minute to get to know a bit more about the mysterious Thyladomid. Check out the interview, and his new Beatport top 10, after the jump.

Thyladomid, ‘The Voice’ [Off]

Who are some of your earliest musical influences?

I have played the piano for over 10 years now. So in my early years, it was actually composers like Brahms, Chopin, and Liszt who influenced my musical development. My parents always listened to jazz and blues.

How did you get started DJing and making music?

I started producing records in 2006, when I was 18 years old. There was a small club near my home and I was totally impressed with the way that DJs could make people dance. After a view visits I decided to buy myself some DJ equipment. I knew that all this equipment is very expensive, so I started working in a factory. After a few months, I had everything I needed to produce electronic music. Two years later I had my first release on a small netlabel.

Who gave you your first big break in the business?

My first big release was on Steve Lawler’s VIVa Music. Six month later I released ‘The Voice’ on Andre Crom’s Off Recordings, which was a big success.

Can you tell us what the name Thyladomid means? We’re scratching our heads.

Well, this is something everybody is asking me. First of all, I set up the name Thyla, which actually came into my mind for no special reason. A friend of mine then came up with Thyladomid. I decided to make the project my personal diary of electronic music.

What’s your preferred time slot when you play, and how would you describe your DJ sets?

I love to play open air sets. You can do much more with them. I just love it. In clubs, I prefer to play afterhour sets but I love playing the peak time as well.

How do you explain your music to your family members, and what’s their reaction?

Uhhhh. Well. There is actually no understanding for this kind of music. But it’s been tolerated so far!

Where do you record and what kind of gear/software are you using?

I record at home using only my PC and Fruity Loops software. It’s just amazing what this program is capable of, if you just use it the right way.

When you sit down to make a track, what’s the first thing you typically do?

I create a beat in a sequencer at first. Actually, I make up a small part of the track that could be in the middle of track already. Then I build up the end and the beginning.

How would you say your productions have changed since you first began recording?

At the beginning I produced more experimental minimal techno stuff. Now it’s shinier and deeper.

Your latest release includes the track ‘The Voice’, which is currently at number four on our overall top 100 chart. How does this make you feel?

I must say it makes me proud a little bit. I didn’t expect that kind support or reactions from people. I even get fan mail!

Which record (by another producer) do you wish that you had made?

Oh, there are so many good producers around, but I love productions from Felipe Venegas [a] or Matthew Herbert [a].

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing with your life?

Something boring and depressing.

When you’re not listening to electronic music, what do you listen to?

Classic music, jazz, and stuff like Coldplay or Radiohead.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned since you began your musical career, and what advice would you give to someone who’s just getting started?

If you really really want people to listen to your music then you have to work hard, but it’s worth the effort.

Tell us about your upcoming gigs and releases…

There is a special event I am looking forward to. It’s the Hell & Dunkel Open Air, together with Robert Dietz [a], Lauhaus [a], David Labeij [a] and Reboot [a] at the end of August. There’s also a gig in London in mid-September. And I’ve got EPs coming up on Siam Recordings and Natural Rhythm [a].
