Pepsi Calvin Harris Remix Contest

Introducing: T_MO

Introducing: T_MO

Timo Garcia [a] needs no introduction, having given us a wealth of major club bangers over the years. Now, moving beyond his mind-bending blend of electro, progressive and house productions, he takes a new musical direction and a new alias to match: T_Mo.

The creation of Garcia’s T_Mo alias was born of necessity. The lifestyle of a traveling DJ can be grueling, so when Garcia returns to the studio, he rinses his mind of the throbbing kicks and strung-out synths still ringing from the weekend gigs and jumps on an upright piano to write full-length melodies that are then worked into soothing, chilled-out electronic grooves.

“After touring, the music I play at my gigs is the last thing I want to hear when I’ve just come back from the road,” Garcia tells us.

But while such laid-back melodies and grooves were second nature to the London-based DJ/producer, who learned piano at 12 years old, the development of T_Mo as a full-fledged side project came about quite by accident. When Sander Kleinenberg [a] asked Garcia to remix his “My Lexicon,” the production he delivered stunned Kleinenberg. Instead of a pounding, peak-hour mix, he came through with a sublime downbeat mix that Kleinenberg couldn’t turn down.

Since then, Garcia has delved further into the project, availing himself of the opportunity to work with extended arrangements and more abstract beats rather than the tightly chopped-up patterns and heavy 4/4 pulses of house, progressive, or electro. The final product is his first chillout album, World of Sound, a 14-track adventure released on Deep East Music. While other DJs may suffer through their post-weekend recoveries, for Garcia, getting back to the studio is easy like Monday morning.
