Introducing: Renaissance Man

Introducing: Renaissance Man

Renaissance Man are, in fact two former architects from Finland. Having dominated their native countries’ house scene the Finnish duo turned their attentions to Greater Europe, winning hearts and warming dancefloors with their outlandish style of housemusic. Having garnered so much attention Jesse Rose [a] was keen to snap them up to this Made to Play imprint earlier this year.

With prestigious shows being lined up in venues such as Fabric and Panorama Bar, Beatportal thought it was the right time to catch up with the plurallistic confused producers and introduce them to our community.

Hometown, current location

We’re both from Helsinki. Now Ville is in Berlin.

Released first record in;

First Renaissance Man record came out in April 2009 on Dubsided [l]

Releases so far, label affiliations;

EP on Dubsided, EP on Sound Pellegrino and two EP’s on Made To Play [l] plus tons of remixes all across the board.

How did you get started making music?

We originally met while working for the same architect office in Helsinki.From there we ended up designing a new club a new club in Helsinki, the client was Lil Tony (from Innervisions) and he asked us to do a monthly night at the club. After doing the party for a year or so we though we’d try out to make a track together just for fun and that ended up being released as the main track of our first EP.

Do you DJ or play live (or both)?

So far we’ve only been DJ’ing. Maybe some live stuff in the future if we find a reasonable and interesting way to do that.

How did you get your name ‘Renaissance Man’ and shouldn’t it be ‘Renaissance Men’?

Yeah that’s what everybody asks. Well the name itself is a joke about ourselves. We met working on architecture and now we think we can make music so, in a way we of try to be “Renaissance Men”. But maybe if you’d combine our skills we could only pass as one “Renaissance Man”, not two.

How did you end up on Made to Play Records?

We got introduced to Jesse at a party in Berlin. A bit later he asked if we had some new material we could play him, and we ended up signing couple of the tracks as our first MTP EP.

Where do you record?

It’s a combination of a classic bedroom (actually a kitchen) studio, and a room that I call studio. We’ve also been working on another proper studio room, but as we work mainly on laptop, it’s easy to move around and switch settings.

What inspires you when you go into the studio?

We use a lot of samples, so quite often we have a sound or a sample what we start wokring on. Sometimes it could be also a more abstract idea or a concept that undergoes some rigorous testing in the studio.

What inspires you to leave the studio?

Mostly hunger i guess.

How would you describe the music you make to an elderly person?

Electronic Dance Music.

Which record do you wish you had made?

Herbert - Bodily Functions.

If dinosaurs were about to trample through your house and you had chance to rescue only one record what would it be?

Herbert - Bodily Functions or Romanthony [a] - Wanderer

What records are you hammering out live at the moment?

Well the new EP obviously, also a lot of KINK stuff, VonStroke remix of Percolator, dOP remix of our track “What Is Guru” and several tracks from the new Kompakt Total 11 compilation.

When you’re not making music what are you usually up to?

Sadly usually I find myself wasting my time and brain capacity with all the information internet has to offer. Also ping pong has been a hit this summer.

Upcoming gigs, releases

We got a remix for Azari & III dropping pretty soon, and a lot of exiting stuff we can’t talk about yet!
