Introducing: Excision

Introducing: Excision

Over the past couple of years, one North American DJ in particular has risen through the ranks of the dubstep elite with his unique, punishing. Canadian born Excision [a] runs the Rottun Recordings [l] imprint and broke through into the mainstream with his 2008 remix of Pendulum’s ‘Showdown’.

Since then, Excision has had a string of Top 100 tracks on Beatport, including ‘Subsonic’, ‘Boom’, and ‘Warning’, and he snagged a Best Dubstep Producer nomination in the 2010 BMAs, making it the perfect time to catch up with this emerging talent from Kelowna, British Columbia.

How did you get started making music?

I started in 2006, after dropping out of a business degree and deciding a life of numbers wasn’t for me.

I had always loved music and had tried playing many instruments but never really found one I truly enjoyed. I discovered drum & bass along with dubstep in late 2005 and had been listening to both of them so much that the dream of creating all the crazy sounds in my head just took over.

Are you a vinyl junkie, CD-DJ or a laptop DJ?

I love vinyl, but it just doesn’t make sense for someone who tours as much as I do. I’m not a fan of staring at a computer screen while I play, so I use CDs.

Where do you record?

It’s been in a bedroom since day one and still is, athough I’ve been constructing a 100% pro studio for the last six months in my basement. With a massive investment in the best materials and top of the line equipment I really can’t wait to start using it, only a few more months to go!

Preferred piece of kit/software?

Cubase, Massive, Albino 3, Predator, Kontakt 4.

What diet inspires you to eat such bass heavy beats?

A horrible diet consisting of way too much airport fast food and take out. Although lately I’ve been cooking a lot more, trying to clean up my act and live past 50!

If a forest fire was about to engulf your house what three records would you save?

My first record, ‘No Escape / Bug Powdah’ (ROT001); ‘Messiah / Beckoning’ by Konflict [a]; and Vex’d‘s ‘Degenerate’ EP.

Which record do you wish you had made?

‘Konflict - Messiah (Noisia Remix)’ (good answer – ed.)

If you had to be stuck on a desert island with another producer who would it be?

From my friends, either Datsik or Downlink. From anyone in the world, Rob Swire of Pendulum [a]—the man can make any sound or tune he wants with such little effort.

What’s the best gig you’ve played so far this year?

I can’t pick just one but Detroit, MInneapolis, Denver, Los Angeles, Calgary, and Vancouver have all had the golden combination of a ton of people with a wicked sound system!

Are you cat person or a dog person?

Dog.

Upcoming releases?

There are a ton of upcoming EP’s on Rottun from a lot of great new artists. Next up on Rottun vinyl we have Downlink & Vaski sharing a 12”, and on EX7 vinyl Datsik is showing us some solo work.

For myself, I’m playing catchup after touring so much and am just now getting some new tunes done to release later in the summer, be on the lookout for more collabs with Downlink, Datsik, Subvert, and Evol Intent!
