Interview with Will Bailey AKA Rudi Stakker
Interview with Will Bailey AKA Rudi Stakker
19 September, 2008 | 5.07PMBrummie boy Will Bailey has been churning them out for a few years now, but it’s in the last year he’s really started coming into his own.
His inventive productions mix up grotty electro house with touches of minimal techno, and a wide array of big, naughty noises.
A producer and DJ with immense talent, a massive will to succeed and a presence behind that decks that is a sight to be seen, he has been on a worldwide mission to rock dancefloors since the 2003.
With an incredibly impressive discography of 30+ recordings already and a DJ diary that takes him from his studio near Birmingham to clubs all over the world, including Privilege (Ibiza), Ministry of Sound (London), Godskitchen (Birmingham), Club Bon Bon (Shanghi) Soma (San Francisco) and Famous (Australia), it would seem that Will is well on the way to achieving his goals.
Under his guise of Rudi Stakker, Will continues to grow as an artist, producing more tracks on a slightly deeper tip such as ‘Stakker’ ‘Pitch Fork’ and ‘Chime’ that have seen praise and support come from Chris Lake, Steve Angello, Pete Tong, Jon Gurd, Filthy Rich, Meat Katie, Mixin Marc, and Jelo to name but a few. We caught up with him to get the low down......
So, how has your summer been going?
I’ve had a great summer, haven’t seen much of it, I’ve been hiding in the studio for most of it.
What was it like to play at a big festival like Global Gathering?
I cant really describe it - it was incredible, the vibe and the people, it was immense.
You are releasing a lot of music under different aliases such as Rudi Stakker, Twocker and as yourself. Can you describe to us the sound of each persona?
Well, Will Bailey is mainly a dirty vibe, I wouldn’t really call it electro, it’s a fusion of all sorts - garage, hip hop, house.
Rudi Stakker is where I get deep and lay down rolling techno and tech house vibes.
I’m really enjoying this project; it’s a sound I’m really gettin’ into.
Lastly, Twocker was basically a bit of fun, I was one half of the project. It’s again a mash up of different vibes.
At the moment your Rudi Stakker stuff is going really well and you’re receiving huge props from the likes of Meat Katie and Steve Angello. What has Rudi got coming up over the next few month?
Yeah, I’ve been gettin’ great feedback of guys like Dave Seaman, Meatkatie, Ricky Stone, James Talk and Angello.
There is a remix for Ricky’s label ‘Flatbelly’ coming out Monday called ‘Pushed Out’.
I’ve recently done a remix for Chris Lake for his label Risin which I’m really excited about.
I’m also working on a remix for Noir at the moment as well.
Apart from Rudi Stakker what else have you got coming up on the production front?
Well, I’ve actually started a new project called ‘The Secret Underground’ which is a leftfield and downtempo project with Mikey Hook and Keydroy.
I’m doing some Will Bailey remixes for Ministry of Sound at the moment too, again with my brother Mikey.
What’s your studio set-up like and what’s your favourite bit of kit?
I’m really loving my studio set up now, it’s taken sometime to build it up over the years but for me now it’s perfect.
My favourite bit of kit would have to be the Access Virus, couldn’t live without it.
I’m a big fan of the minimoog too.
How long does it take you from the initial idea of a track to the finished article?
Well, sometimes it can take days and then sometimes it can take just a few hours.
Sometimes the best tracks happen really quickly; if the vibe is right things happen fast.
On Monday mornings things usually happen slowly.
You’re off on an Australia Tour in October. Tell us a bit about that?
Yes I cant wait, toured Australia in January too, had a wicked time so I’m looking forward to getting back out there.
The clubbers out there are always up for it.
Where do you see yourself in a year’s time?
Hopefully taking my Rudi Stakker sound on tour all over the place.
That’s definitely something I really want to do. And also to work with more artists along the way.
What’s the best club you have played?
That’s such a difficult one to answer.
Godskitchen, Sankeys, Mission in the UK, Fresh 44 in Russia, Bon Bon in Shanghai.
There’s so many great clubs. A special place for me though is Reckless in Stoke, like a second home, the people are more up for it then anywhere Ive travelled.
Any more exciting news to tell us about yourself?
Well, I’m off to play the Nocturnal festival in Los Angeles in a few weeks, which I am rather excited about!
