For those not in the know, Ian Carey is and has been over the past couple years a key player in the house scene in the USA and Europe. His recordings and remixes have been released on labels such as Élan, Defected, Universal UK, AM:PM, Ministry of Sound, Warner Brothers Germany, Hed Kandi, Azuli, Tommy Boy Records, East West Germany, Houseworks Switzerland, Oxyd Records Italy, Slip N Slide Records UK and countless others… His first vocal production, with Jason Papillon as Soul Providers, “Rise” was a crossover hit around the world. When asked, Ian and Jason both say they had no intention of making a mainstream record; it just worked out that way. Since then Ian and Jason have made many underground anthems (such as “Try My Love”, “I Don’t Know”, and “Let The Sunshine In") staying true to their soulful sound and not compromising their music to fit the mold of current radio trends. We caught up with the man of the moment to get the low down on his world ahead of his performance for Kinky Malinki....
You’re a key player in the US and European House scene and you have released music on labels such as Defected, Universal and Ministry of Sound, So what happening right now for you?
i’m actually in the studio all this month to finish off my album, i’ve got allot of great tracks on there, so look out for it!
You had major success with your record ‘Get Shaky’ how did this track come to be?
this has been a track that just won’t go away, i made it back in 2007 and released it originally on my label in early 2008, at first allot of the big labels werent in to it because it sounded too “different”, gradually they all came back for it. it’s a great feeling to tell them “you should have listened the first time”.
When did you first start djing? What influenced this?
i started back in 1993 playing hip hop, i grew up listening to hip hop, so it was a natural interest, combining that with my upbringing in the music industry via my parents, i gave it a shot...it’s worked out great.
You are also known as the Ian Carey project, is this a separate moniker to your Ian Carey work?
yes, i did 2 records under this name, but both icp and ic are going on my album.
Does the music made under the project differ to your normal productions?
at the time yes, it was me looking to the future of dance and looking for what’s next. but at the moment all my work will be consolidated under the name ian carey for the sake of releasing albums.
Most djs and Producers will have a track that has stuck with them for as long as they can remember do you have one (or two) what is it?
ive got tons...ill name 2, chicago - street player, lil’ louis - french kiss.
You have played at some amazing venues and festivals what has been your most enjoyable gig and why?
thats such a hard question, yes i have played amazing venues and festivals, on every continent and over 50 countries i might add...but to say whats been the most enjoyable gig is unanswerable....
Do you have any weapons for the dancefloor you would like to warn us about prior to playing for KM?
oh yeah, got new productions, some remixes ive just done, and some bangin new tunes i’ve got in, you have to come down to find out what they are though!!! :)
