Interview with Ferry Corsten
Interview with Ferry Corsten
13 August, 2008 | 9.54AMWith well over 200 releases under his belt and a sure spot slated for him in the top 10 for DJ mag’s awards this year, trance master Ferry Corsten has been making big waves.
Beatportal checked in with Ferry and got the scoop on what’s new on his Flashover Recordings imprint, his second installment of Full on Ferry, and more of his latest goings-on.
Some of your most successful releases came out under your System F alias, but you’ve stopped releasing under this moniker. Why?
I did indeed start producing more under the name Ferry Corsten than with System F in the recent years.
I guess it made sense to pick one name to work with as a producer and DJ as I was producing under the alias System F but DJing under the name Ferry Corsten.
Do you think you’ll pick it up again in the future?
Will I ever produce under the alias System F? I´ve learned through the years to say never say “never”....
At the Dance Valley Festival this year you played back-to-back with Tiesto. What was that like?
Dance Valley Festival was really fun this year.
Flashover Recordings had the opportunity to host the 2nd largest stage.
We used a valley that had not been used since 2001 and it was a beautiful location.
We of course had our artists such as Preach, Rafael Frost, and Breakfast to promote from the label aside from myself, and we also had a special guests such as Judge Jules, Bart Claessen, Cosmic Gate and of course, Tiesto to close the valley with me.
It was really fun to play with him back-to-back. He´s a great DJ and a good friend.
For Gouryella fans, can we expect you to collaborate again under that alias?
We actually played a couple of months ago, back-to-back, in Ruby Skye in San Francisco for Spundae.
It was a spontaneous thing really and worked out really well. The crowd ate it up!
You, Armin and Tiesto are the trance kings from the Netherlands. Can you speak to that relationship a bit?

Tiesto, Armin and I go a long way back.
I´ve worked with both guys on a production front with each other at one point or another.
With Tijs it was under the artist names Gouryella and Vimana, and with Armin I produced the tracks `Exhale´ and ´From the Heart´.
I am happy that they are successful in what they both do. It takes a lot to succeed in this industry nowadays.
You’ve recently been nominated as top trance DJ in Ibiza DJ awards, and are slated to kill it in the DJ mag awards. How do you feel about that?
It´s always great to be nominated for the top trance DJ in Ibiza or for any award for that matter.
This year has been a lot of crazy fun on the island. It´s been a great summer.
It´s always an honour to be nominated for an award or to be voted for.
Whether you win the award or not that you are in any case recognized by people or your fans that they support what you do and that you do well in your craft.
Today the world of the DJ is all about digital. Do you miss vinyl and the tangible quality that comes with that? What are your thoughts on the sound, and the main difference between vinyl and the tools of today?
I definitely miss vinyl. I remember those days when I would jump in my car to the pressing plant to press my latest production to play for the weekend.
I remember always being stopped at customs because every time my DJ bag would go through security, they would see a huge ball of steel due to my vinyl steel acetate plate at the X-ray machine.
I do appreciate, however, that I don’t have to carry a giant block concrete with me anymore.
On your Flashover Recordings imprint, who are some of the up and coming artists?
Embrace – ‘Embrace (Leon Bolier Remix)’
After the release of the original version and the Ferry Fix, we wanted to have a more trancy version.
Dutchman Leon Bolier was our first choice and he delivered a great remix. Armin van Buuren, Sander van Doorn, MIKE, Heatbeat, Andy Moor, Mark Sherry, Jochen Miller, Mr. Sam all have shown support.
DJ Preach –’ Joomla’ (Boom Tsjak)
This is an ultra cool track with massive support already by Judge Jules, Sander van Doorn, Marcus Schössow, Bart Claessen.
There’s a new label by 20-year old USA-based producer Breakfast, called Moody Moon Recordings.
The first release ‘Only Two Should Know’ has received massive support from Above & Beyond, Markus Schulz, Judge Jules, Agnelli & Nelson, Lange, John O’Callaghan.
More super cool releases on its way such as ‘Breakfast presents Loomer - Take Me Back’ with an amazing Mike Saint-Jules Remix.
Randy Boyer & Eric Tadla – ‘Aden’s Dream’.
This is a song that Eric (who recently passed away) wrote for his son Aden.
Although he has been around for a while, we have recently signed Preach and we’re very proud to have him.
He’s been doing an amazing job lately .
And another one to watch is Tritonal ‘Forever EP’.
Please talk about your upcoming “Full on Ferry” event in November. What’s the line-up?
I am really excited for the second edition of Full on Ferry 2008.
This year, I have invited Sander van Doorn, Eddie Halliwell, Lange, Solarstone, Marcus Schössow and Sidney Samson.
Similar to last year, I invited artists that represent various sounds that I have produced in all my years as a music producer.
It is a great opportunity to be able to showcase these artists and play with them back-to-back.
Through this I get to show how trance music gels well with various genres of music.
What about the masquerade?
The masks represents the different styles of music that I have produced throughout my career and gives the whole event a nice little sexy twist.
And finally, what’s your vision of the future? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years, I see myself taking it a bit slower on the DJ side and working more on the production front… but then again you never know where life takes you!
