Interview with Matt Herdman (Definitive Recordings [l])

Joining us is one of the newest members of John Acquaviva’s imprint Definitive Recordings, Matt Herdman, writer and producer of the latest release for Definitive “Hold On” as the follow up to his successful release “Wasted Intellect / Just Like”.

Q: First off tell us a quick bit about yourself?

A: Ahh, lets see. Ive been producing for around 3-4 years, I’m 24 years old and have a never ending thirst for learning about anything and everything and I am from Windsor Ontario.

Q: Where do your influences come from?

A: My influences are primarily within electronic music as well as acts along the funk and soul lines. Anyone who grows up across the border from Motown is fairly versed in the hits of that era. Although I wish it was the same way for the underground sound of Detroit Techno.

Q: Do you find that the Detroit Techno scene is quiet in Windsor?

A: Not so much quiet but not as well known or understood as I think it deserves to be. There is without a doubt a dedicated group of people in both Windsor and Detroit hard at work to bring it into the spotlight it deserves, folks like Remo at the Boom Boom Room in Windsor or Tom at the Bleu Room in Detroit are doing a great job of booking top notch acts and getting more and more people into the sound. Then theres the local artists who have a clear dedication to promoting things, its a small but ever growing family.

Q: So as things continue to grow where do you see yourself going?

A: Well my hopes are too keep things on the current line they’ve been heading. I’m loving the work I am doing with Definitive, Robot Needs Oil (Greg Kobe), VNNR, Mr Wonk, Justin James and Anthony Attalla, who I already have another remix with. I’ve been real fortunate so far and believe that if I keep working hard that things will keep on this path.

Q: Tell us a bit about your recent release “Hold On”

A: “Hold On” is a track that I have been messing around with in various forms for a while as I dabbled in between other projects. It was also my way of capturing my love for so many different styles from electro to techno. Along the way I was also bouncing some ideas off John (Acquaviva) and his experience really helped me to fine tune the track to what it is now.

Q: What about the remixes?

A: With the remixes i wanted to capture the different possibilities that I knew some good friends of mine were perfect for. On the electro tip we’ve got VNNR from Belgium with a remix thats a quick one two punch that will bring the party, no questions asked. There is also the electro minimal stylings of Mr. Micro Wonk which keeps on building and building and is sure to spread the love even to the techier side of things. Then there is the anthemic remix by Robot Needs Oil (aka Greg Kobe), this remix is a peak time thriller sure to get some fists pumping! Joining me on the tech house edge is Detroit’s own Anthony Attalla, he took the original and twisted it to bring a darker harder edge that is already pleasing crowds across North America. And last but not least is my podcast (www.onesandzeroeslive.com) partner in crime Justin James, and he highlights the darker edge to the growing styles found in Toronto.

Q: Sounds great. Any last comments?

A: Big shout out to all the Definitive family, all the remixers and to everyone thats been there with me along the way.
