Interview: Rising trance duo W&W

Interview: Rising trance duo W&W

W&W burst onto the trance scene back in 2007 with Armin Van Buuren [a] hammering their single “Arena.” Their unique ability to fuse trance, electro and techno also ensured support from the likes of Tiesto, Ferry Corsten [a], Markus Schulz [a], Sander van Doorn and Judge Jules [a] and their dedicated fanbase is now growing by the day. The Dutch duo’s other massive releases include “Mainstage,” “Alpha” and “AK-47,” and with a hectic festival schedule and their weekly radio show “Mainstage”, it’s no wonder they’re being tipped as the next big thing. We interviewed them…

You met at Trance Energy in 2007, right? Can you tell us a bit about that and how you came to working together?

Yes we met at Trance Energy back in 2007. We started hanging out after that and made our first W&W track half a year later.

Armin van Buuren has been championing you for a couple of years now – when did he first approach you and what was it like meeting him?

When we finished our first single “Mustang” we uploaded it to Armin’s server where everybody can upload their promos. A week later, he played it on his radio show and after that we immediately got an email from the Armada Music office saying they wanted to sign the track. Since then we’ve got a really good relationship with Armada and Armin himself. The first time we met him was of course very exciting since we’ve always looked up to him.

It’s that time of year when voting in the DJ polls has started again – who are your top 5 DJs?

Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Afrojack, Sander van Doorn and Marcel Woods. All of these DJs have inspired us a lot through the years.

Can you tell us a bit about your debut album? It took you a year and a half to produce – are you perfectionists?

We definitely are perfectionists! Every single sound needs to be exactly right, but there needs to be a certain point where you decide it’s finished, otherwise you can go on for ages.

Which record are you most proud of making?

One of Willem’s favourites so far is “Impact” and Ward’s is “AK-47.”

What’s your favourite tune at the moment?

Tiesto’s “Maximal Crazy.” It’s killed every dance floor we’ve played over the last couple of weeks.

How would you describe the trance music scene right now?

The trance music scene is changing more than ever these days. It’s influenced by a lot of other different genres, which creates interesting and original music. For us, this change fits perfectly because we can produce more freely and create different sounds. That’s the thing we love to do most.

What’s the best gig you’ve played this year?

That’s a hard one because we’ve had a lot of great gigs this past year. Playing to 20,000 people at 5am for the ASOT 500 party in Buenos Aires is definitely one to mention though.

Did you play in Ibiza this season? What was it like?

Yes we played Full on Ferry at Sankeys. It was a lot of fun to play back-to-back with the legend Ferry Corsten. Ibiza was great as always – it’s one of our favourite places.

Do you ever DJ on your own or do you prefer working as a duo?

Before we started working together we both DJed on our own, but we prefer producing and DJing as a duo because that’s when we’re at our best.

What’s next for W&W?

We’ve just released our artist album entitled Impact and we’ve been reshaping our sound a lot lately, so expect a lot of new and different stuff from us next year.
