Interview: Nôze get delightful and drunk at Mutek

The French duo Noze is Nicolas Sfintescu, who is co-founder of the popular Circus Company imprint, and Ezechiel Pailhès, a classically trained pianist.

Together these guys appeared off the hook to an enthusiastic rain-soaked audience on Sunday during Mutek festival’s outdoor Piknic Electronik event.

With keyboards and vocals, Nôze delivered a very energetic and wacky set in which they fused together genres such as, jazz, hip hop, klezmer, house and techno.

Although often rambunctious and out of control, there’s no denying that the duo has a powerful and distinct stage presence.

We’re talking silly to the nines and screaming, as in punk rock.

They were exuberant and extremely funny to watch, and they managed to keep the crowd dancing in the rain.

They didn’t fail to perform their well-known signature marks: the adornment of straw hats, and the stripping of Nico’s shirt.

Plus, Nico’s enthusiasm continued well into Mathias Kaden and Onur Ozer’s set, and he was seen dancing and eventually ushered off stage by security.

Before their gig Nôze was kind enough to speak with me, under a tented roof, shielded from the pouring rain:

How did you come to work with the Get Physical Label?

Nico: Because they wanted us.

We gave our soul to Get Physical because they have a lot of money.

What are you excited about this summer?

Ezechiel: Bikinis!

Nico: And there’s a lot today, because the sun is shining and it’s 35 degrees… and everybody is naked.

It’s very nice today—I feel a little bit like I’m in Ibiza!

Which musical artists do you like?

John McEnroe, John Sebastien, D’Angelo—we don’t listen much to electronic music, we listen to a lot of jazz and classical.

So it’s a difficult question… because I know you expect me to mention electronic artists.

There are some artists like Mathew Herbert, but you know we are not very up to date with these other artists.

Tell me about the name of your latest album.

‘Songs on the Rocks’-- it’s songs made for drinking.
