Interview: Innovative trance producer Arty

Since releasing “Rush” on Anjunabeats [a] [l] last year, Russian DJ and producer Arty has been setting the trance scene alight. His melodic anthem “Zara” reached the #1 spot in the Beatport trance chart in January, his remix of the Ferry Corsten [a] classic “Punk” is arguably the best remix of the year so far, and he’s just mixed the latest Anjunabeats Worldwide album with Danish trance champion Daniel Kandi [a].

We interviewed Arty as part of our Artists to Watch 2011 earlier this year, and we’ve caught up with him again to talk about the upcoming Anjunabeats Worldwide 03 release, his career so far and the trance scene in general. Read on for the interview…

What’s your favorite track from your upcoming Anjunabeats Worldwide 03 compilation?

I know it’s my own track, but I’d have to say Arty & Mat Zo [a]‘s “Rebound.”

Daniel Kandi has mixed the second CD on the album – how do you rate him?

I think that Dan did some great work on the compilation. He’s included some great material from his label Always Alive, and there’s a lot of exclusive stuff from him, including his forthcoming Anjunabeats track “Soul Searchin.”

How did you feel when you got signed to Anjunabeats last year?

It was one of my main career goals when I first started producing, so I was really happy when my first track, “Rush,” got signed to Anjunabeats. Right now I’m really happy to be working with such a great team.

What have been your three greatest achievements so far?

My debut in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs, my IDMA nomination and being invited to the ASOT 500 show in Den Bosch. But there are a lot of other things that I’m really proud of, like remixing for Above & Beyond [a], Ferry Corsten [a], Paul van Dyk [a] and Sander van Doorn.

What do you consider to be your best record so far?

It’s always hard to choose the best record from your own work, but I think “Zara” is the best original track and my remake of Ferry Corsten’s “Punk” is the best remix.

When and how did you get into trance music?

It happened three or four years ago, when I first heard “Shivers” by Armin van Buuren. I fell in love with this style because it’s so melodic and uplifting. I became a really big fan of trance music after that and started hunting out as much new music as I could find.

You’ve been hailed as the next big thing in trance music, but who do you rate for the future?

Mat Zo for sure. He’s the one of the most talented guys on the EDM scene.

Who are your favorite trance DJs?

The most impressive performances from trance DJs that I’ve seen were from Gareth Emery [a] and Sander van Doorn. I really love what they do as producers and DJs, combining a lot of different styles. It’s really close to my own musical ideals.

What was the last record you listened to?

Nero [a], “Me & You” – it’s an amazing record!

What’s your favourite track at the moment?

Two tracks that I really love at the moment are Sander van Doorn’s “Love Is Darkness” and the new Above & Beyond single, “Sun & Moon.”

Anjunabeats is a forward-thinking trance label, but what other trance labels do you rate?

Armada [a], High Contrast [a], Enhanced and Flashover [a]. But there are a lot of other small labels with unique releases and talented artists.

With records from Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond and Sander van Doorn in the mainstream charts, do you think 2011 could be the year of trance?

Why not? There’ll be a lot of albums out from big trance DJs and a lot of really big festivals all over the world. So hopefully this will be a successful year for the trance scene.

You’ve been pushing the genre in new directions and developing the sound – what would you say to people who say trance music all sounds the same?

Music, particularly trance music, can’t stay in the same place. It’s developing and a lot of styles are being incorporated into each other. Yeah, maybe trance is experiencing a difficult time right now because of too many changes in style, but we still have a lot of great and incredible tracks from trance producers nowadays, so there’s nothing to worry about. Everything will end up in the right place, I’m sure.
