12 July, 2008 | 4.04PMFabric Nightclub last Saturday night in London was fantastic.
People filled the dark rooms as they normally do, and techno sounds were heard throughout.
It was a purely physical as well as ear-throbbing experience.
Room one featured Craig Richards, Ivan Smagghe, Heidi, and Lopazz Live who were quite good and had people dancing as well as watching the stage during their set.
Room two featured Terry Francis, Adultnapper, and Alexi Delano.
And in the smaller room three Hippie and Halo and Dave Jones DJ’d.
The number of American artists on the bill was astounding.
Alexi Delano
has just had a collaborative release, Machine Run EP with Tony Rohr for Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8
label.
After his killer set, Beatportal caught up with Alexi Delano to hear about his recent news.
Tell us what is coming up next for you?
I have a few remixes coming out and I’m working on another solo E.P. for Clink Recordings. I’ve also made a new A.D.N.Y.
(my old house moniker) E.P. for Francis Harris’ label, Ransom Note
.

What is your favorite part about playing at Fabric Nightclub?
I always feel welcomed and part of the family when I’m there.
Most clubs where I play, I tend to go to 30-40 minutes before the gig, but at Fabric I like to go and hang out hours before.
What are your favorite kinds of places to play?
I like small venues the best but they have to have good sound.
I like to play places where if I look up and out over the crowd I can actually see people’s faces and have eye contact.
I also like places where you wouldn’t expect to have a party.
I did this one event in Sweden that was on top of a mountain in the north of the country and all you could see when looking up and over the booth were mountain peaks.
Up there in the north the sun never goes down so the view was constant, just the color of the sky would change. It was an incredible experience.
You’ve got a very international perspective of arts and culture – being from Sweden and living in New York. What makes living in a multi-cultural international city like New York special?
I haven’t been able to find any other city with the same potpourri of people and cultures as there is in New York City.
It’s hard to put a finger on why I love New York so much, but to me it’s such an inspirational place.
The friends I have made here are lifelong friends.
It’s just a shame that a lot of them are moving or have moved to Berlin or other places in Europe.
Their absence certainly changes the face of the city in some ways.
Where has your sound come from and where is it going?
My sound has gone through so many colors that I’m starting to forget the color of the canvas.
In the beginning I was certainly inspired by Latin music as both my parents are from Chile and really into music.
There wasn’t a day where music wasn’t blasting at the house and my parents randomly got up and started dancing around the apartment.
As I grew older I moved on to classical and later to Electro and R’n’B.
I remember my first productions being a bit of all of this, just mashed up tunes.
It took me a while to understand where I wanted to go and to separate all of the concepts and just focus on one at a time.
I started with some funked up house music and at the same time some ‘90’s minimal techno.
The Swedish label Svek is probably the label that represents my progression throughout the years and it allows me to understand where my present sound comes from.
Where is it going?
That’s a good question.
If I knew exactly where it was going it wouldn’t be as much fun.

Do you think techno music is in a certain phase or cycle right now in terms of the direction that the music is going in?
Electronic music has never been at a complete standstill.
There have always been a few producers that move the sound forward and then the copycats follow.
At the moment I think that there are a lot of copycats out there and it makes the music feel like it’s not progressing as much.
Cyclically speaking, more and more producers are getting back into using their old analogue equipment and yet again reshaping the new sound with help of the old.
In my opinion, electronic music today is healthy and moving onwards.
Where can people catch you in the next months?
Some of the bigger parties that I will play this summer are:
Meganite at Privilege in Ibiza: 16th of July.
Minitek Festival in New York: 12th of September.
Awakenings in Belgium: 4th of October.
