Image Line Software updates Edison
22 December, 2008 | 1.00PMWhen is a VSTi not a VSTi?
When it’s an audio editor.
The Image Line elves have clearly been busy with the holiday goodies, as their latest announcement will attest.
Edison, their wave editing and audio recording tool is now available in both VSTi and standalone versions for Windows-based production systems.
More interestingly, Image Line announced that the program is no longer part of their Juice Pack plug-in suite, and will be sold separately from now on.
Here’s how it works as a VSTi.
Edison loads into any mixer track (VST effects slot) and then can record or play audio from that position.
It’s also possible to load as many instances of Edison as their host CPU can support.
More intriguingly, parallel or chained instances of Edison are all possible.
Edison also includes some nifty extras like convolution reverb, which allows users to sample the acoustic properties of real spaces to create a near-identical reverberation as the original space.
There’s also a Blur tool that can smear any sound into a lush, spacious and ethereal pad.
(That one actually sounds pretty darn innovative to us.)
Here’s a list of key Edison features:
- Optimized for sampler content (supporting sampler region/s & seamless looping).
- Drumloop slicing (auto-slicing & slice manipulation)
- Drag-and-drop support
- Variable recording mode (start/stop with host, can also work as an audio logger)
- Time manipulation (time stretching/pitch shifting, scratching)
- Effects processing (convolution reverb, blur, linear-phase EQ, etc.)
- High-quality resampling for sample rate conversion and pitch shifting.
- Detailed spectral analysis display mode.
- Click-free editing.
- Full undo history.
- (Pascal) scripted manipulation of waveforms.
- Control surface support (FL Studio 8 version).
System requirements: Windows XP/Vista, minimum 2GHz AMD or Intel Pentium III compatible with full SSE1 support, 512 MB RAM and 130 MB hard disk space.
Plugin formats: Standalone, FL Studio plugin and VSTi 2.4 (Windows-only)
More details can be found on Edison’s product page.
Edison can be ordered from the Image Line Web Shop for US $99, which qualifies buyers for the Gross Beat special we covered last week.
