Ibiza oil tanker wreck to be dive site
14 February, 2008 | 1.56AM- Section: Music News Topics: Ibiza
A 140m-long merchant ship that sank off Ibiza last July looks likely to open to scuba divers.
The Don Pedro, which was carrying more than 200 tonnes of oil from Ibiza’s port, hit the small island of Isla de Daus and sank to a depth of 43m.
A massive clean-up operation was carried out shortly after the sinking, which led to local beaches being closed during the peak holiday season.
The wreck’s owner, ferry company Iscomar, has ruled out the possibility of refloating the vessel and a salvage operation looks increasingly unlikely, according to local divers who have had permission to explore the site.
Jeff Richardson, owner of Sea Horse Sub-Aqua Centre on the island, said he was expecting an official decision to allow diving on the wreck ‘any day now’.
Which is great news for scuba divers - Ibiza has never been known for top dive spots.
The opportunity to explore a 140m ship at a 43m depth is pretty exciting.
