Ibiza Council’s u-turn on clubs

Ibiza Council performed an apparent u-turn on Saturday over its support of the island’s nightlife industry.

Public funds from the Tourism Marketing plan will now be earmarked for the promotion of the island’s nightclubs, a move that signals that the council understands the importance of the clubs for tourism.

Xico Tarres, chairman of the council responded to claims of a u-turn.

He said: “This is not a contradiction because it is a change and evolution, since all things are subject to change.”

“We want Eivissa to remain number one of the world in terms of music, which can not continue without being aware of what can happen because we treat it badly.”

Xico Tarres also revealed that the council wants to extend the clubbing season, which currently runs from June to September.

He said: “The efforts will be reciprocal, as the clubs could agree to open earlier and later in the season for at least a year to see if it is possible to lengthen the season.”

Tarres’ language was much more positive than it has been in the past.

Just a few months ago he came under a lot of criticism for saying that after-hours clubs, “attract a lower quality of tourist and cause more problems than benefits.”

The President of the Federation of Spanish nightclubs Pere Vidal, said he was “very satisfied” after the meeting.

Let’s hope that they really mean it.
