I Go Deep (The Remixes)

dunnEASY [Grei Matter]

Solid remix effort here from dunnEASY [a], who goes to work on the Yass single ‘I Go Deep’, released initially at the start of the summer.

As record labels go, Kerri Chandler’s Grei Matter [l] is really still in its infancy, this being only its fourth release thus far.

The focus has squarely been on house music with a nod to the past, which is very much in keeping with Chandler’s general approach to music production.

For those who missed it, Yass’s original was a jackin’, piano-led affair that pushed all the right buttons in terms of getting a party started, Chicago style.

In remix round one, the Aloha Mix slaps LT Brown’s vocal amongst a percussive fiesta.

Woodblocks, congas and a slurpy batch of hi-hats weave amongst each other whilst a skank-tastic bassline does its thing below them.

Easy manages to fashion a different slant on the Original, whilst still remaining in roughly the same ballpark.

The Big Room Mix fairs not quite as well.

The percussive sensibilities from the previous mix are retained, but they are joined this time by a circa 1992 synth-riff.

The two components don’t quite match each other, almost like an idea that was attempted but not truly pulled-off.

Still, it was probably worth a re-visit if only for the Aloha Mix.
