I Am A Vocoder

I Am A Vocoder

Gay Cat Park [Clone Classic Cuts]

People involved at the coalface, e.g. DJs, producers, label owners and journalists, often forget that electronic music is about having fun.

There is a need for discourse and debate, but there is also a time for dancing and partying, and celebrating the ingenious sounds and rhythms that can be squeezed out of assorted hardware and software.

Italo producers understood this concept earlier than anyone else, which explains why classics like ‘Problemes D’Amours’ and ‘Dirty Talk’ have a sense of humour - it’s easy to imagine Robotnick or Klein & MBO chuckling to themselves as they composed their tear-jerking melodies.

Serge’s Clone also understands the concept of not taking music too seriously — and that’s why he has unearthed this 1982 production.

Based on a cheap yet infectious Casio-like synth riff and a repetitive lo-fi drum beat, Gay Cat Park’s ‘I Am a Vocoder’ features a daft, vocodered vocal telling us about what it’s like to be a vocoder.

It’s daft, puerile and more infectious than ebola.

Listen to it once and you’ll automatically start tapping your thumb.

By the third listen, you’ll be jumping around your living room, singing into an unplugged hairdryer.
