Hyperdub returns with Ikonika’s ‘Please’

After blowing out the back end of ‘07 with the release of Burial’s massive ‘Untrue’ LP, Hyperdub [l] are back in action, kicking off their ‘08 schedule with the debut single from Ikonika [a].

An up-and-coming producer based out of the UK, Ikonika approaches the tried and true dubstep template from a fresh perspective, marrying bleeping synth patterns and crisp half-step beats in order to create tracks that fall somewhere between Kode9 and Aphex Twin, with a bit of Skream’s knack for melody thrown in for good measure.

Featured on label boss Kode9’s Sonar preview mix last summer, ‘Please’ occupies the singles a-side.

A wonky 5-minute blow out filled to the brim with careening melodies, skanking bass and windswept pads, ‘Please’ is one of the most thrillingly unpredictable tunes to hit the scene in ages.

On the flip, ‘Simulacrum’ follows suit, with Ikonika sneaking some seriously catchy lock-step riddims and blurting keys into the hook for maximum dance floor impact.

Hyperdub have long been innovators within the dubstep community, but after the unabashed novelty of Hyperdub’s last EP - which showcased the grating 8-bit dubs of Quarta 330 - Ikonika’s debut is something of a return to form for the label.

Expect this 12” to be everywhere as ‘08 kicks into gear, and be sure to keep an eye on Hyperdub.

They’ve got some BIG tracks in the pipeline!
