Hospital’s High Contrast and his new album

High Contrast has continuously pushed the boundaries of contemporary drum & bass, and his talents are one of the most demanded around, having done remixes for White Stripes, Missy Elliot, Basement Jaxx and more recently on Axwell’s ‘I Found You’.

Now he releases his third album, ‘Tough Guys Don’t Dance’, described by IDJ as “all killer, no filler”.

In this segment, he delivers a video talking about the concepts and the processes that went into making the album.

From opening track ‘If We Ever’...

The cut features Diane Charlemagne (who people may recognize as the voice behind ‘Inner City Life’), who sends the listener into liquid bliss all the way to album closer ‘The Ghost of Jungle Past’, a more upbeat affair touching upon his roots as a drum & bass DJ.

The album makes for magnificent listening all the way through. Stand out tracks include ‘Everything’s Different’, a jazz fuelled stomper, and ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ — a track that the listener could confuse as the soundtrack to a fast-tempo ‘60s movie.

The production of the album is meticulous, and the music has broad ranging appeal for all drum & bass heads around. [Check below to listen to the album.]

For those who like more hardcore, cutting edge drum & bass, Beatport is pleased to welcome on board Planet Mu.

Planet Mu, a diverse label set up by electronica pioneer Mike Paradinas (Muziq), offers the likes of breakcore/junglist Shitmat through to dubstep warrior MRK-1. A wide-ranging catalogue that offers something that no other label can — an ideology based around creativity.

For those who really like hard breakcore/junglist action, definitely check out ‘Grooverider’ by Shitmat. If you listen especially carefully, you will hear the likes of Amerie and Britney Spears being amalgamated into this concoction of mad-jungle-wrongness. Not for the faint hearted.

Tip of the week would easily have to be Twisted Individual’s ‘Galloping Elephant’.

The dirty, squidgy bass stomps all over the rolling bassline and crushes the listening synapses in a dirge of drum & bass filth. Lovin’ it!
