Here’s a bit of a strange career change: Roland Sebastian Faber used to make speed garage and later 2-step during the 1990s, most memorably as Kinky Roland.
After a few years off the radar, he’s back, and by the sound of ‘Hommage’, has acquired a studio the size of most normal-sized sitting rooms.
It seems that Roland has also spent his time off hunting down obscure early 1980s Italo disco records, and he faithfully recreates this sound on the spacey, warm-bass led title track.
He resists the urge to make any kind of contemporary updates in the way that Legowelt or Tyrrel do, and there are no rough acid influences, high-energy rhythms or clipped electro drums audible.
Indeed, if you close your eyes and listen, especially as the cacophony of synths reaches a peak on the second version, it feels like you’re being transported to a darkened back room in a Rimini disco during the haze days of the early 1980s.
It’s hard not to be impressed by such a strong desire to re-create the perfect electronic disco groove.
