Hermanos Inglesos interview - ‘Komodo’ single release
5 August, 2008 | 1.52PM- Section: Music News
With their debut single ‘Komodo’ just released, we caught up with Didier Engels and Cédric Engels from Hermanos Inglesos to find out more about the popular Belgian DJ duo, their music and DJ set.
What was the inspiration for your debut single Komodo?
Cédric: For me it was my trip to Asia last summer. I had a certain feeling that led to ‘Komodo’… I think the track takes you along on a trip, too.
Didier: Cédric’s inspiration was already enough so I mainly tried to follow him on that trip.
If you had to file ‘Komodo’ in your record collection, which two artists would it go in-between?
Cédric : I never play tracks of our own, because I always think they could be better. My brother plays them, though…
Didier: Somewhere in between Fake Blood and Primal Scream maybe.
How is it to work together as real life brothers?
Cédric : It sucks big time!
Didier: Idem dito!
Can you tell us about your approach in the studio?
Cédric : We are complementary and that makes things easier. A second opinion is absolutely necessary!
When I make something I don’t want my brother to sit next to me because I don’t want to discuss for two hours what snare or compression we are going to use.
I also need ‘space’. It’s just me, myself and I.
Although I really want my bro to be involved when I make something so I can hear his opinion and propositions for changes.
From that stage we finish the track together. Most of our tracks for the album are also co-produced with Ramon Tapia.
So, in the end we have worked on a track with three people.
Didier: Let’s say most of the time I take care of the melodies and structure and Cédric is rather the music engineer. But it’s all very organic in the end.
How is it to follow in the footsteps of Soulwax and The Glimmers as resident DJs at the Culture Club in Ghent?
Cédric : It’s great because they’ve put Belgium back on the map, pushed boundaries and they also compel us to bring quality music… Expectations are high.
I think style-wise we are situated in between Soulwax and The Glimmers. Isn’t that great? : )
Didier: Culture Club is a fantastic learning school as I think it has one of the most difficult and demanding audiences in Europe.
You have been playing most major clubs and festivals in Belgium. Which DJ sets have been the highlights of this past year?
Cédric : Pukkelpop definitely.
Didier: We also had a great gig in Nouveau Casino/Paris where we realised that even the French audience loved the typical Belgian known songs we sometimes put in our set.
What’s next for Hermanos Inglesos?
Cédric : Full album on Fine Day Records, my graduation and my brother who is getting married.
Didier: We are very much looking forward to the full album as it gives us the opportunity to work a bit more in different directions.
We are even working a few “slower” pieces.
