Heavy Day
Falko Brocksieper [Sub-Static]
14 May, 2008 | 2.05PM- Section: Music Reviews Topics: Beatport Blog
Falko Brocksieper’s first album, ‘Hoax Deluxe’ from back in 2003, was one of the most underrated releases of its time, a skillful blend of club-friendly dynamics and hi-res, airy synthesis that encapsulated the emerging school of Teutonic tech-house at its best.
A lot has changed in the German scene since then, but fans of Brocksieper’s unfussy, straight-ahead style will be pleased to hear that ‘Heavy Day’ continues in largely the same vein.
That said, a clutch of tracks here venture into markedly new territories.
‘Emotional Support’ features a syrup-thick vocal turn from Swayzak collaborator Richard Davis, ‘Face It’ ropes in Sub Static cohort Mia for some gently soothing electro musings, and ‘What You Like’ stretches Big Bully’s soulful tones across a fuzzy, bumping groove.
Meanwhile, spring-propelled club burners like ‘Lament’ and ‘That Night’ neatly demonstrate Falko’s flair for combining strong, smart melodies with sharp dancefloor beats.
It may have been a while coming, but the forward-thinking force of ‘Heavy Day’ has been well worth the wait.
