Crazy Canadian intergalactic super-producer Hatiras is back with a promise to inject fun back into a dance music world that has become clogged with egos, artificial hype and beat-snobbery. His latest single, “Mmhmm” comes with a smile inducing Youtube video that compiles clips of stuttered images consisting of 80s workout vids, Arnold Schwarznegger, Jem, E.T. and a flying wiener dog to name a few. The tune, “Mmhmm” which taps into and updates the classic filtered french disco-house sound made famous by labels like pre-Daft Punk’s Roule Records and Chicago’s IHR releases exclusively on Beatport on January the 25th.

What’s happening in the world of Hatiras?

Loads. Touring, making music, playing old school video games. I’ve been channeling my early production roots playing with funky samples again and chopping them up in new ways. I’m having a lot of fun in the studio refreshing that classic filtered disco sound. It needs to come back properly ‘cause frankly I’ve become very bored with a lot of the schizophrenic cloner electro and boring minimal that we’ve been inundated with over the past few years. I’ve finished a good handful of these types of tunes that’ll see release over the coming months on Hatrax Records.

What’s the meaning of “Mmhmm”, the strange wiener dog and the workout clips?

The tune felt right and funky, so I named it “Mmhmm”. Everything else in the video is part the dream I had while making the tune.

So, you make music in your sleep?

I wouldn’t call it sleeping. More like abduction by shiny suited little green men. From there we all press buttons together and come up with strange sounds.

Finally, any advice for aspiring music producers?

Have fun with it. Stand on the table, scream, throw something. That’ll set the tone for true creativity and rule breaking. Follow your gut and make music that moves you. Everything else will follow.
