Techno’s focus has deshifted back to Europe since the start of this decade.

Unfortunately, the race to re-discover minimal techno seems to have overlooked Holland’s contribution.

Indeed, long before Minus was a glimmer in Herr Hawtin’s eye, Dutch labels like 100% Pure and Eevolute were putting out futuristic techno music.

While Stefan Robbers’ imprint continues to represent the more esoteric end of the sound, the re-launched 100% Pure has taken inspiration from its back catalogue but also from contemporary shifts and developments.

Label owner 2000 And One and rising star Bart Skills are the most notable purveyors of this continuum, and ‘Handsome’, a collaboration with Anton Pieete under the name District One is no exception.

The title track revolves around a shuffly, tribal house rhythm, similar to 2000 And One’s tracky releases, but the dramatic chord progressions are lifted straight from the 1990s techno producers’ handbook.

‘One 2 One’ follows a more basic approach, with the same kind of rolling, DJ-friendly rhythms embellished by echoing effects.

There’s nothing radically new on offer here, but the improved production standards and willingness to synergise US house with old school techno suggests that there is some fresh thinking at work.
