Gonzales’ piano rap comes to an iPad commercial
23 August, 2010 | 1.04AMFor anyone wondering about the jaunty music in Apple’s new iPad commercial, wonder no more: it’s a song called ‘Never Stop’, by the Paris-based Canadian polymath Chilly Gonzales.
It’s just another step in Gonzales’ campaign for well-deserved ubiquity in 2010. The champion chess player (really) and Guinness World Record holder for the longest solo piano concert (no, really) is about to drop not only a new album, ‘Ivory Tower’, but also a feature film of the same name, written and produced by Gonzales and featuring the likes of Tiga
, Peaches
and, yes, Gonzales. (The lead single from that album, ‘I Am Europe’, came out at the beginning of the month, featuring remixes from Claude VonStroke
, Djedjotronic
, and Dirty Doering
.)
‘Never Stop’, which came out last April, is a co-production with Berlin’s next big crossover star, Boys Noize
, who also co-produced the forthcoming album. But you’d probably never guess it from the sound of the song, which arranges sprightly piano arpeggios over a laid-back groove of shakers and finger snaps. It’s all very Steve Reich, and Erol Alkan’s ‘Piano Pella’ even more so; Gonzales turns into an improbably charismatic MC on the ‘Original Rap Mix’, name-checking Daft Punk
and the Gossip’s Beth Ditto. Check, and mate!
Update: Gonzales’ ‘Ivory Tower’ is out today!
