Global Gathering UK: Trance headliners
30 July, 2008 | 2.40PM“I really don’t like that,” said one trance fan as Armin van Buuren climbed onto the decks in the Godskitchen Arena after playing his set at this year’s Global Gathering. “He’s not that good.”
But thousands disagreed. After playing a set that blinding, he could re-enact Michael Jackson’s controversial Jesus impression and even Jarvis Cocker wouldn’t protest.
Dropping tune after tune after crowd-pleasing tune, Armin revisited old classics like his own ‘Burned With Desire’ and his favourite record of last year, DJ Shah’s ‘Who Will Find Me,’ as well as playing out new hits such as Lange’s ‘Out of the Sky’ and DJ Shah’s beautiful ‘Back to You’ from his ‘Songbook’ album.
Arguably Armin’s best ever set, it reinstated his position as the world’s number one DJ.
Now Tiesto could have done better.
There’s nothing wrong with playing old tunes (as long as they have ‘classic’ status), but to open with the mediocre ‘Do You Feel Me’ – a track from his 2007 ‘Elements of Life’ album – was a bit of a let down.
He didn’t help himself by going on to drop a bizarre mix of ‘I Bruise Easily’ (a song by Natasha Bedingfield, who is one of pop music’s most hated artists) and Chicane’s ‘Saltwater’ (which is rated as one of the best trance records of all time).
That said, however, it was a set of two halves and by the end you were left with a sense of satisfaction – and let’s face it the crowd loved it for the simple fact that he is Tiesto.
But with a new compilation out this year (‘In Search of Sunrise 7’), a world tour, his new residency at Privilege in Ibiza and an exclusive upcoming gig at the O2 Arena in London, you can’t blame the disappointed fans who were expecting to be blown away.
