Global Gathering: Micky Slim
Global Gathering: Micky Slim

is one of those rare artists who fully embraces the culture of dance music.
He remembers why he got into the scene in the first place, which is why he made the effort to attend this year’s UK Global Gathering for the whole weekend, rather than simply flying in, playing his set and leaving.
In fact, he enjoyed mingling with the other festival goers so much he stood us up twice because he was having such a good time! But when we finally did catch up with the electro house DJ from Birmingham, here’s what he had to say.
So how was it for you?
I’ve been going to Global Gathering since 2000 and this year has been the best so far. The people were up for it, the numbers were great and the weather was so much better than last year’s wash out. I think that too many DJs forget what festivals are about and get used to the VIP treatment, so I wanted to enjoy the festival as a punter and prove to people that I’m just a normal person.
Who was your favourite act?
Mark Ronson rocked the main stage. Although I didn’t like it when that guy came on stage – what’s his fucking name? Oh yeah, Wiley.
And what did you think of KanYe West’s performance?
I like KanYe West – I’ve got all of his albums, and I was looking forward to seeing him because it was going to be such a big production and there was so much hype about his light show, but I don’t think it had that wow factor. It didn’t blow me away because he didn’t step it up as much as he should have done. I think people were expecting the kind of visuals you get from a dance act like The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim.
Do agree with the opinion of many dance music fans that Global’s event organisers tripped out when they booked a hip-hop star to headline?
I can see why he was chosen, because there’s only so many times you can book Underworld and The Chemical Brothers, but he didn’t deserve to be on the main stage on his own on Friday night.
Your set on the other hand was amazing…
Thank you, I really enjoyed it. When I dropped in some drum ‘n’ bass at the end, everyone just went mental. I was on such a high when I finished, I couldn’t wait to get partying again.
