German techno DJs take on racism

Electronic music has always had a unifying quality to it, and the inclusiveness of its parties can be argued to be socially beneficial with regards to building tolerance.

Often though, this aspect of electronic music culture is forgotten in the waves of dismissal that authorities generally throw at youth culture movements.

Not in Germany however, where a group of DJs are actually using dance music to combat racism.

This November, German DJ Monika Kruse [a] has organised two anti-racism parties to raise money for the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, an organisation that seeks to combat right wing extremist youth in East Germany.

Under the banner of No Historical Backspin, Monika Kruse along with a number of high profile techno artists will play at the Mau Club in Rostock on November 27th and at E-Werk club in Erlangen on November 29th.

Since 2000 Monika Kruse, with the help of some other well known electronic music artists such as Paul Van Dyk, André Galluzzi, Anja Schneider [a], Kiki [a] and Tom Clark [a], has managed to raise over 60,000 Euros for the foundation.

The Amadeu Antonio group developed as a reaction to a growing number of Neo-Nazis and other right wing organisations who are distributing racist and anti-Semitic propaganda in east Germany.

“Their message is embedded in a culture of supposedly ‘apolitical’ music, comics and video games that celebrate the superiority of the German race and glorifies violence against minorities,” explains the foundations directors in their mission statement on their website.

That makes the No Historical Backspin parties political, with a rare social imperative.

Pascal FEOS [a] (check out his music in the player below) and Marc Miroir [a] will play at the November 27th party and Mobilee label head Ralf Kollmann will spin on 29th November alongside Mijk van Dijk.
