Garuna EP

Gorge [8 Bit]

Functional. Hardly a glowing adjective to begin a music recommendation with but this would be the most accurate term with which to describe 8Bit [l] boss Gorge’s latest musical offering.

Confusingly ditching his Reclick [a] moniker he usually dons for the label, Gorge [a] issues a double dose of ‘floor-focused fodder; one of which works wonderfully, and one that well, sort of does.

‘Garuna’ is an equal parts blend of bass, percussion and synths that radiates a sort of deep Mannheim glow. This is, if you like, this week’s representation of the modern deep house record, so please remove last week’s corresponding tune from your box. Thanks.

Brothers Vibe, who caught fire for a good portion of 2008, turns in a fairly lackluster remix that focuses a little more of the dramatic traits of the original but stumbles quickly into a bland tribal soup.

Pick of the release then is the ‘B-side’ ‘Nyota’.

Now let’s not get things confused here; this is not wildly different from the flip’, but (and it is a big but) the track is patched together in such a way that you cannot help but immediately turn your thoughts to what this would do to a dancefloor.

You can almost tick them off as you go: Soulful vocal stab? Check. Reverb-ridden breakdown? Check. White noise blast? You know it.

The high turnover nature of dance music demands records like this get pressed, and, as it goes, this one happens to be totally fit for purpose.
