Joints From The Lab

7 October, 2008 | 10.41AMI was interviewing Misstress Barbara back in 2001 and after a half-hour of impassioned debate she got me to admit that DJ Rolando’s ‘Jaguar’ could, in some way, be considered trance.
I was used to hearing Francois K work the hell out of it at Sunday house party Body & Soul, so this wasn’t an easy thing to consider.
Over the years, people would also attempt to convince me that it was actually techno, and of course the deep house heads still claimed it as their own.
It all depends on how you pitch it.
That’s probably what makes that record great.
‘From The Lab’ by MidiDropMusic – aka London boys Mrcenzo and Matt Masters – doesn’t have the blood-heating, string-laden drama of ‘Jaguar’, but it does share its genre-straddling properties.
It’s got the breakbeat/synth stab combo of early-2000’s trance, with a crisp uptempo chug that could wake up an overly languid deep house set (without going overboard).
Think Dr. Kucho’s ‘Belmondo Rulez’ without the carnivale; more minimal but still ante-upping.
The other three tracks on the ‘Joints From The Lab’ are similarly elegant and energetic.
