Forever V.I.P
Forever V.I.P
G Dub [Ganja Records]
27 May, 2008 | 1.21PMWhat is it with the phrase “V.I.P”?
It means remix, we know that, but why is this term ONLY used within the realm of drum & bass?
V.I.P means very important person, so ... OK, forget it, it doesn’t have any special meaning within drum & bass - it’s whatever you want it to be.
‘Forever V.I.P’ embellishes a style popularised by Clipse, borrowed by artists as prestigious as Dillinja, with off-key, chorus-effected, grinding square-wave synths being the order of the day.
This track samples a huge chunk of Vangelis’ classic ‘Blade Runner Blues’ song from the Blade Runner film.
If you like to go out on Friday and Saturday nights and get mashed off your face, you’ll love ‘Forever V.I.P’, after all, it’s a big track that’s being caned by everyone from Roni Size to Andy C.
That said, it has very little depth outside of the dance floor.
Summing up, ‘Forever V.I.P’ is a huge part of what drum & bass is - like it or not - and will be loved by devoted drum & bass fans.
Now, onto ‘Beast City V.I.P’.
This follows on from the former number, with those horrific, gurning, detuned synths vomiting everywhere, but everything is now juxtaposed with a touching bell melody.
If only the basic pattern being played out with the dirty synths (merely a few semitones apart) was banished from ‘Beast V.I.P’ - it would perhaps have been more emotional and haunting.
