will be getting mighty foolish this Wednesday at the Lektroluv
label night at Amsterdam’s Paradiso club, alongside RipTide, Nobody Beats the Drum, and Wannabe a Star. Just in time for the occasion, the ‘fools have a ton of new tunes out, including today’s “Tonight"/"Super Summer” EP and a remix for Critical Mass’ ”Burning Love 2010,” also out today.
Read on to see what they have to say about the current Dutch dance-music renaissance.
Which local clubs, DJs and record labels were most significant to you when you were first getting into dance music?
The Dutch club scene has been strong since the early ‘80s. For us, growing up in this country meant that we were exposed to dance music from an early age. Back when hardcore/gabba was a big national hype, you’d hear the music everywhere, from TV to radio. Afterwards the trance took over, and since then dance music has always been considered an equal style next to rock, hip-hop etc. Seeing DJs play their favorite tunes on primetime TV shows and hearing electronic music all day long was an inspiration and a reason to start doing it ourselves as well. Local clubs have always been playing (commercial) house as well so you just couldn’t get around it. The Netherlands was probably the first country where DJ’s were seen as actual superstars while hip-hop was still small, so many members of our generation were pushed into this direction, while many kids these days want to be rappers instead. So many friends bought DJ sets for their 16th birthdays, it was crazy!
What sets Dutch music apart? Is it possible to define a Dutch sound?
It’s probably only definable as an international sound. Back in the ‘90s the hardcore sound went big internationally, after that it was mainly trance and now the so-called Dutch house. It’s probably because the Netherlands is such a small country, that as a producer and DJ you quickly focus on the rest of the world.
Which artists and labels from your country should people be looking out for, and why?
Sandro Silva, Dem Slackers, Riptide, Nobody Beats The Drum, Bart B More, Laidback Luke
, Hardwell
, Don Diablo
… this list can go on forever! There’s much new talent next to the Tiestos and Armins who everybody already knows!
