Flying naked into Buenos Aires
6 March, 2008 | 9.34PM- Section: Music News Topics: South American Music Conference
The good news is we’ve finally landed in Buenos Aires, 12 hours late.
The bad news is, our luggage hasn’t turned up.
The bags must have got lost somewhere in between Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Buenos Aires.
That means we’re stuck in the clothes we’ve been wearing for the last 30 hours, and it’s starting to smell.
The airline gives us $100 US each so that we can buy some clothes tomorrow morning, but that’s a tiny token for the inconvenience it has caused.
Thankfully at arrivals a driver is waiting for us sent by Mariano Trocca, the organizer of the South American Music Conference.
The driver Martin turns out to be a top bloke, and helps us stock up on emergency toiletries – deodorant and toothpaste.
Soon we’re speeding down the freeway, with the big man Mariano on the phone being thoroughly sympathetic to our so-hurtful-it’s-fun journey.
In these sorts of situations you can either laugh or cry, and we’re laughing, drunk from the debilitating flights and heady from all the time zones we’ve just crossed.
Our inner karma, one could say, is fucked.
But beneath the red eyes and giddy heads there’s still a willingness to party Buenos Aires style.
Tonight is the opening party of SAMC and it’s almost 1am already.
Here’s the plan. We’ll check into the hotel, order room service and booze, and shower up.
Then we’ll go straight to the club and see if we can start this SAMC blog for real.
Ready? Break!
