Flash Brothers bring electronic music to Kenya
13 January, 2009 | 6.17AMThe continued globalisation of electronic music culture continued on New Year’s Eve, when Israel’s Flash Brothers
became the first high profile international DJs to bring electronic music to Kenya, Africa.
The trio played on the white sands of Diani Beach in Nairobi, and confessed to Beatportal that it was surprisingly one of their best gigs of 2008.
Flash Brother IIan revealed that “the crowd was surprisingly awesome and very up for it, shouting our name and going crazy to every track we played.”
The Flash Brothers found themselves seeing in 2009 in Africa, after a chance email in June 2008 reached them from one of the main party organisers in Nairobi, who revealed that thanks to the Internet, the Brothers had a quite the fanbase in Kenya.
“We checked out the option, and after realizing that people there were really inspired by our music and knowing that we would be the first known international DJs to perform there, we decided to go for it,” said IIan.
The boys tailored their set to their audience by dropping some tracks with African vocals in them, and the feedback was so positive the Flash Brothers plan on returning to Africa soon.
“Since returning home, we’re received daily emails, Myspace and Facebook messages from Kenya fans asking us to come back, so after such a great vibe we’re planning to in 2009,” revealed Ruven.
“The hospitality everywhere was so friendly, and in Kenya English is one of their two main languages as it used to be a British colony.
Shmuel continued, “Ultimately, it’s a great feeling to be able to take part in such a fresh scene and to help it grow up.”
