First Breaks Update with Sub-Frequency Funk

Welcome to the first of many breakbeat news updates for Beatportal. A regular column dedicated to keeping in touch and locked down to the thrills and spills, the highs and lows and the ins and outs of our little breakbeat world. Keep checking up every week to see what’s been happening with the breaks on Beatport, what’s new and what’s buzzin’.

New Labels

This week I need to turn your attention to our latest label additions, Funkatech and sister label Sub Frequency Funk [l] [check out SFF’s tunes in the player below].

Funkatech; home to Specimen A [a] and Far Too Loud [a] are current leaders within the NuSkool breaks genre, such that Far Too Loud recently beat Krafty Kuts and Plump DJs to claim best single at this years Breakspoll awards.

Sub Frequency Funk, on the other hand is home to Napt and DJ Mutiny [a].

Mutiny will be recognisable to most of you as the artist that has dominated the breaks top chart position recently with recent release ‘SoulRunner’ on Botchit.

Stand out release ‘N – Funk’ has been described by KMag as being ‘a stomping electro bass monster’, whilst Mutiny’s ‘Most’ comes with a classic, rolling nuskool Breakfastaz remix.

Ed Solo & Skool of Thought

In other breaks news Ed Solo [a] and Skool of Thought have seemed to have taken an interesting turn in direction with recent release ‘Sludge’ on Against The Grain.

The tune has exactly zero breakbeat elements, and is fact one of the dirtiest, heaviest dubstep tunes you’ll hear around.

This tune is released exclusively on Beatport and is definitely worth your attention.

Such is the influence and dominance of dubstep at the moment it has even now infiltrated the world of breaks.

Should this news wet your whistle then look out for Freq Nasty’s new content, www.myspace.com/djfreqnasty.

Plus, if you’re in America or Australia then watch out, Freq Nasty [a] might be playing in your neighbourhood soon.

Tip of the week

‘Just Let Go’ by Simpleton [a] on Spinout. The Boabinga and ID monster remix is a dancefloor crusher, with a drum beat similar to that of Evil Nine’s Crooked, but with a progressive electro synth line.

Some of you may recognise Simpleton as Vandal who previously released the breakbeat stormers ‘Idiots’ and ‘Mad As Hell’.
