Finger Lickin’s Abel Reynolds gives Beatportal his Breakspoll breaksdown

In the run up to this year’s annual Breakspoll awards, the one award ceremony tailored for the breakbeat community, Beatportal have been quizzing the big players within the scene to give us their perspective as to who they think will walk home with the big prizes.

This week we asked Abel Reynolds, one of the founders behind Finger Lickin Records [l], home to the Plump DJs and Soul of Man, and one of the most pioneering and longest running labels in breakbeat.

Best Album

Well, it’s a choice of ‘Re-licked’ by Soul of Man, but then I would say that.

Or maybe ‘Beserka’ by Merka on Fat! Records, which is a great album.

Best Single

It’s got to be Plump DJs ‘System Addict’. I know it’s shameless, but it was the biggest breaks track of last year, with a close second of Lady Waks & Hardy Hard ‘Minimal’.

Best Label

Only one choice, of course: Finger Lickin Records.

We withdrew from the competition last year, as we had won it every year since Breakspoll started, but we are back in the race this year as loads of other labels have stopped or are distancing themselves from breaks, so we thought we should again pick up the mantle and wave the breaks flag.

Best Producer

Again, I would have to say the Plump DJs – but then I have had the privilege of hearing their next album (available from Beatport at the end of May).

Best DJ

He’s not an out and out breaks DJ, but he was my favourite DJ of last year: A Skillz. Not that I am biased!

Best Website

Where would we be without NuSkoolBreaks?!

You can see whether Abel is “not so biased” and test his “critical preview” of the forthcoming Breakspoll awards ceremony by getting yourself down to Fabric (London) on the 28th February.
