Interview: Filo & Peri Return on VANDIT with ‘Shine On’
Interview: Filo & Peri Return on VANDIT with ‘Shine On’
23 September, 2008 | 6.13AMAlmost a year since The Anthem smashed into the top of the Billboard charts and burned up the prestigious UK top 40 chart, US duo Filo & Peri
are back, this time with ‘Shine On’.
Released on Paul van Dyk’s behemoth imprint Vandit Records
, this is another epic big room all-out trance anthem, with the silky strains of Eric Lumiere once again on the vocals.
Dancefloors and DJs are already getting their respective knickers in a twist about it, with the original mix, Aly & Fila mix and an Activa take all doing global business.
But with ‘Shine On’ carrying on the boys’ trademark hands-in-the-air, spine-tingling euphoric sound, does this mean that Filo & Peri are just a one-trick pony?
Or is there more to this US dynamic duo than floor-filling, speaker-busting tracks? We caught up with them halfway over the Atlantic to find out…
A combined love of Poison, Guns’n’Roses and Motley Crue on one side, and Kraftwerk, Underworld and Orbital on the other might not exactly seem like the standard formula for dance floor success, but it’s working fine and dandy for New York natives Filo & Peri.
The chart-topping duo from across the Pond scored a Billboard #1 and a place in the prestigious UK top 40 last year with their debut release ‘The Anthem’.
After what seems like ages – and to be fair it has been pretty much almost a year – Filo & Peri are back and look set to do it all over again with new track ‘Shine On’.
Why has is taken you so long to come up with another single after The Anthem?
Bo:Well, to be quite honest it took a long time due to some label related issues.
‘Shine On’ was actually finished in October 2007! We have a ton of tracks on the backburner waiting to be released on various labels, as well as our brand new label Big Room Music.
What’s the thinking behind ‘Shine On’?
Dom: To make a universal track that both trance fans and a more mainstream audience could appreciate. In a nutshell!
How has ‘Shine On’ been received by other DJs and your fans?
Dom:Very well actually! All three mixes debuted in the trance top 20 in Beatport and it’s still climbing.
I just heard it on Sirius satellite radio on my way to the studio so I guess people like it!
The Anthem broke you into the mainstream – were you happy with that? Do you want to be mainstream artists or are you happiest residing in the underground?
Bo: We were very happy that Anthem reached so many people though we don’t like being labeled either way.
We have one main goal in our careers – to introduce dance music to as many people as possible.
We both feel that dance music has the power to be more than just a genre of music – it’s a movement and for a lot of people including ourselves, a way of life.
The more we expand the genre the further it can grow so why worry about what’s underground and what’s in the mainstream? Good music is good music regardless of how it’s classified.
You work a lot with Eric Lumiere
on vocals and he’s back again on Shine On – what is it about his voice that you both feel fits with your production?
Bo:Well first and foremost, Eric is a really good friend of ours. His voice and writing lends itself very well to dance music. We just finished writing a batch of new tracks – some with him on vocals, and some using other singers.
What are your plans for the future?
Dom: To keep making good music, travel the world DJing, and one day maybe open up a nightclub.
You’ve set up your own label that you can channel Project FNP into – why did you feel it was necessary to do that?
Dom For us it was something that was unavoidable.
As DJs we don’t stick to a straight up trance style and we wanted more freedom with our productions.
We are very diverse producers and DJs and Project FNP is going to let us expand our sound.
After releasing a track like ‘Anthem’ the big labels expect vocal tracks from us so Big Room Music will be our outlet for club oriented tracks.
The first release is expected in late September, early October.
It is called Buzzed Up and will have several remixes including a John O’Callaghan (JOC) remix and progressive and house remixes.
Tell us about the Project FNP sound…
Bo: Project FNP is going to be for hard hitting, underground club tracks. Filo & Peri will be the more vocal trance/crossover records.
Our goal is to bring people into the scene with our vocal records, and then from there they can dig into things.
What’s the next track we can expect from Filo & Peri?
Bo: “Buzzed Up” under Project FNP on our label Big Room Music. We’re working on a compilation for Armada and are in the midst of shopping a batch of new tracks to labels!
We produced a track for Dance4Life that will be announced soon and are proud to be part of such a great cause!
